What's it all about?

I lucky enough to be born and raised by parents and in a community that incorporated fresh food as a way of life. It was 'normal' to have milk straight from the cow, to grab a peach off the backyard tree, to eat a scone warm from the oven, to raid the neighbours' nut trees or to spread home-made jam on a piece of toast from the local baker. As I got older and have had my own children, I realised that this upbringing was deeply ingrained in me and was something I wanted to pass on to my kids. The Bellarine Community Farmers' Market was created around the four passions of my life, which include food, family & friends, community and the environment. In light of this, the main aim is to bring together farmers, growers and producers to provide fresh food and produce, direct to the public, in one convenient location. This activity benefits everyone involved, due to the associated health and environmental benefits of consuming locally grown produce, reducing the food kilometres and by profits being kept directly within our local and regional communities. Our list of produce is growing monthly and so far includes, local fresh, seasonal fruit and veges (spray & chemical-free), vege & herb seedlings, bread, cheeses, wine, olive oil, honey, free-range eggs, organic meat (including a sausage sizzle), preserves, condiments, dips, olives, baked sweet & savoury goods, herbs and spices, plants, flowers, popcorn, poffertjes (mini dutch pancakes), take-away curries, wontons & dumplings and bruschetta, plus coffee. As a small way of giving back to our community, I also have free community stalls, including the 'Shout-Out' stall for any local not-for-profit group to raise awareness about their project(s) and my Shared Community Stall, specifically for backyard fruit and vege growers and local school gardens who don't have enough produce to warrant their own stall. The market also supports the Ocean Grove Park (the market location) which is run and maintained entirely by volunteer staff - a percentage of the market stall fees is donated to this organisation to help ensure this fabulous area is kept available for all future generations to freely use.
